The game changer for me was understanding the different types of mold, some molds are toxic and can pose serious health risks, while dirt does not, one way to differentiate them is by looking for patterns; mold often grows in circular patches or has uneven edges, whereas dirt tends to form more flat or solid shapes, also, if you find the stain in areas with high humidity, like bathrooms or kitchens, it’s more likely to be mold, and checking the surfaces for peeling paint or warping can also help, as these are indicators of moisture issues that promote mold growth.

I dealt with something similar, the biggest indicator for me was the smell, mold often emits a strong, musty odor, while dirt usually doesn’t have a noticeable scent, if you're still uncertain, consider the environment the stain is in, if it's a damp and dark area, it's a more favorable spot for mold to develop, and if you want to take extra precautions, you could use a mold test kit available at hardware stores, these can give you a clearer answer and help you decide your next steps.

BTW, one of the best ways to identify if it’s mold is to do a simple moisture test, mold thrives in damp environments, so if the area feels moist or has a water source nearby, it’s more likely to be mold, you can also check for any visible signs of growth, like black spots that spread, dirt typically doesn't spread in the same way, and if you can, try to scrape a small piece off and observe the color beneath; if it’s dark and varies in color, that's a telltale sign of mold.

Here's the thing, mold usually has a fuzzy or slimy texture, while dirt is often more grainy, if you can scrape it off easily, it’s probably just dirt.

At this point, I suggest cleaning a small area with a mix of water and vinegar, if it’s just dirt, it should come off easily, but if it stays put or spreads, it’s likely mold, always remember to wear gloves and a mask while handling it, especially if it might be mold, taking safety precautions is essential to protect yourself from potential spores.

Immediate action needed, check the area for moisture, if it’s damp, there’s a higher chance it’s mold, consider using a flashlight to see if the texture looks fuzzy, if it does, it’s probably mold.

Been there, done that, the first thing I recommend is to look closely at the color and texture of the stain, mold often appears in shades of black, green, or white and usually has a soft, fuzzy appearance, dirt, on the other hand, tends to be brown or gray and has a more granular texture. Additionally, mold will often have a distinct musty smell, which dirt generally does not have, if you’re still unsure, try using a bit of water to see if the stain dissolves; if it does, it’s likely dirt.
